Reaching Out To Japan: Interview With Noriko Chapman

In most cases, individuals are not hurt by giving to others. For Noriko Chapman, it has created an international collaboration between a local U.S. nonprofit organization and a global leader in the automobile industry which led to the empowerment and economic independence of disabled workers. Chapman, who is a DENSO production manager, had worked with the Tennessee Rehabilitation Center (TRC) in Maryville to help increase its operations efficiency as part of her MBA project. In 2009, the Maryville TRC was ranked at eighth in contract sales in Tennessee. Its mission is to provide services that help lead individuals who have a physical and/or mental disability to employment and are designed to meet individual needs.

However, Chapman's goodwill had many unintended consequences. S-he has had four versions of her first book published in one year, which is impressive for a beginning writer. She pledged 30 percent of the book proceeds to this organization. Chapman also helped to restore $75K of government funding to the Center. Chapman became connected to this organization. She observed, "I was inspired by the staff and by individuals with disabilities who were trying very hard to learn work skills and seek permanent employment." Through her first book, she was able to bring more attention by the media and the public in general to this disability cause. In fact, it landed the TRC's director an expense-paid visit to DENSO in Japan.

DENSO Corporation, headquartered in Kariya, Aichi prefecture, Japan, is a leading global automotive supplier with customers that include all the world's major carmakers. With more than 200 subsidiaries and affiliates in 35 countries and regions (including Japan), DENSO had worked to assist the nonprofit organization with a contract that allowed disabled workers to earn income. In reality, DENSO was offering these workers a second chance. Chapman had made this relationship possible.

Therefore, Chapman has become a role model to millions of women looking to overcome extreme obstacles in life. She has been noted and quoted in such media outlets as Knoxville News Sentinel, Black Pearls Magazine, What's Going On? Talk show, and The Daily Times. The Knoxville Examiner sat down and talked with Chapman during the preparation of her upcoming book tour in Japan.

It appears you are becoming a role model to many women who do not have these opportunities and freedoms across the globe. What can you tell us about the Japanese culture as it relates to women in power?
Japan is a male-dominated society. Japanese women have more responsibilities at home to raise children, manage household chores and finance and support their husbands who work long hours and usually are breadwinners. Even though the culture is gradually adapting to accommodate the female workforce, career advancement for women in Japan is still limited. The changes are not quick enough to satisfy thousands of bright, hard-working Japanese women. Hopefully Japanese companies recognize the positive characteristics of women who can pay more attention to details or can multitask, and they are learning to utilize these strengths.

In addition, I believe we can find a variety of avenues to enjoy our lives. I was born as the oldest child in my family who has owned a small company for 101 years. Due to the fact of being a female, I was not given the opportunity to take over the business. Even though it was a disappointing cultural practice, I had the freedom to choose my career and chase my own dreams. I moved to the US 24 years ago and never regret it. This country gives me so many more chances than I could have imagined. I'm so glad now that I am not male!

Who are the individuals who influenced you when you were growing up in Japan?
My hero is always my 99-year-old grandmother who lives in Japan. She has taught me to treat people with respect, to be strong and courageous and to be able to say "No" when we have to. She is also a business person whose motto is "customer and quality first." She lost her husband and brother in the Philippines during WW2. During and after the war, she ran a family business while raising my father and uncle. She established a group and became a chairperson to help widows and women in the community. She never remarried but has devoted all her life to her family, business, employees, widows and single mothers in the community.

Discuss your planned international book tour to Japan. Why did you decide to do this?
My Japanese colleagues in Japan learned about the book Second Chance, about the Tennessee Rehabilitation Maryville Center with which Denso Manufacturing Tennessee has maintained a good business relationship for years. Some of my colleagues and friends preferred to read my book in Japanese. My family and friends also encouraged me to translate it into Japanese. Some may be interested in my personal stories about surviving cancer. The book cover is a Japanese painting by a lady who has been fighting against cancer. I truly honor her courage and strength. I am blessed to receive the invitation from Japan to introduce the book.

What activities do you have planned on your book tour?
A speaking engagement with Japanese ladies to discuss not only the book but also my career in the US and women's career-related issues. to compare and contrast the cultural differences in Japan and US.

What do you hope to gain with this new book in Japanese?
I hope for people to receive the message that small acts can help our community in many different ways and by different talents.

The first book was done in conjunction with Lincoln Memorial University's professor Dr. Daryl Green. In your Japanese book, you collaborated with Reiko Farr. Please discuss how this came to reality.
Reiko is my friend and co-worker. She is a very polite, caring, faithful, hard-working mother. I approached her with the translation proposal because she knew my personality and the time when I was going through cancer in 2009. Our friendship became stronger through collaborating on the Japanese translation.

How has your company supported your efforts to work with nonprofit organizations?
My employer, DENSO, has supported me to obtain higher education, prepared me with technical experience and materials to support the LMU MBA project Real World Application, and provided adequate contract work to the center. I'm grateful to have the employer who even provided the opportunity to benchmark a manufacturing facility in Japan for the disabled.

Since you have come into the public view, you have been an advocate for nonprofit organizations such as the Center. What are your plans for the future?
I really enjoy the expanding opportunities to be able to interact with people from different backgrounds. I'd love to talk with them, listen to them, write about it, and maybe find common goals in order to make positive changes in our society.

Where can people get a copy of your book and how do we reach you?
The books are now available at bookstores or online distributors such as Amazon.com. I also can be reached through social media such as Facebook.

Proposals for the Regeneration of Blackburn in Lancashire

Following the closure of the 'old' market in Blackburn as the prospects of the 'new' market underneath the Mall is as yet unknown, although we hope it thrives, as Blackburn surely needs this. What are the options for the old market site? There is a concern that Blackburn with Darwen council will fall into the trap of allowing one of the big supermarket chains to redevelop the site. Does the centre of Blackburn need another supermarket? Should we fall for the cash cow again? We need differentiation and variety.

How about Blackburn council being brave and creating spaces that give the town a real unique selling point to attract visitors and business to the town? We believe a modern and attractive outdoor market and new restaurant quarter may be part of a brave and innovative solution.

The town could create stall space under a modern covering that can host regular markets. Examples of markets include Fresh Produce and Food, Farmers' Markets, Charity Markets, Antique Markets, Continental Markets. How exciting and attractive to visitors would this be?

A further suggestion includes a restaurant quarter with many units that are on sensible rents and rates to really attract business. How about offering lower rents to local entrepreneurs, so we don't just end up with the standard national chains? We could also create small retail units on the same basis for local business.

Most of all, create decent parking on the space that is free after 5pm everyday to encourage people to visit the restaurant quarter.

We need thinking beyond the standard and should resist the offers of another supermarket. Let's make our town different, vibrant and exciting. Be brave! Like our Facebook post and page to join the campaign.

Following the news story that the former Cheers Bar on King William Street has had their licence revoked following an appalling range of alcohol related violence and under-age drinking, is this the end for Blackburn as an evening destination?

Looking back 10 or 20 years ago, Blackburn had a thriving evening economy, with places such as Peppermint Place, Manhattan Heights, Coconut Grove, Daniels and many more. People used to travel from miles around to visit the busy town centre. Now this isn't necessarily the kind of evening economy the town needs and a thriving restaurant and bar culture that is family friendly should surely be the aim of everyone.

It is testament to the sorry state of the evening culture in Blackburn that restaurants such as Pizza Hut, KFC and Tiggi's have not been able to survive in Blackburn town centre. In fact, Darwen probably has a wider choice of restaurants than Blackburn. The closure of The Mall in the evenings, although understandable, also creates a solid block of 'no access' right in the heart of town. The redevelopment of The Mall and the market may well have increased footfall during the day, but there is nothing to entice those extra people to stay longer. The redevelopment of the Cathedral Quarter appears to have stalled and is quickly running out of time and the empty Margo Grimshaw flats development add to the frustration.

Blackburn with Darwen Council currently have a golden opportunity in their hands. The former site of the market is a massive area at the heart of the town centre which is awaiting redevelopment. It has been reported that The Mall is one of the handful of companies bidding to develop this large area. The council will decide which of the bidders will get to develop this area but we have long recommended an alternative. Blackburn town centre needs a unique selling point and the addition of more chain stores or, even worse, another supermarket will not add to Blackburn's attractiveness for their evening offering.

Blackburn Council should put the proposals for redevelopment to the public, so that we can all have a say in how our town centre moves forward. The death of the nighttime culture suggests that the choices of redevelopment in the past have not solved the problem and something as vital as this massive redevelopment needs as wide a consultation as possible.

How Volunteer Services Prove to Be Constructive for Human Race?

How about getting ourselves acquainted with the diverse attributes of volunteer services? We totally comprehend the fact that these services are accomplished by those who consider the problems of under-privileged as their own and work with the sole intention of enhancing their lives in such a way that they don't have to face any kind of scarcities in terms of food, housing, shelter, education, nourishment and various other factors. We earn our livelihood taking into consideration several factors but what about those who are not provided the basic amenities that one needs in life? You would find a plethora of communities that have been neglected for a long period of time. Now, the question arises as to why they are uncared for. Several people may hold a different perception when the light is being thrown at the welfare of those who have been living on the streets or have nothing to eat. There are innumerable organizations that bestow volunteer services to zealous individuals that want to make the world a better place to dwell.

Nothing can disclaim the fact that we all need food, money and shelter to survive in this world. If one is taking an initiative to contact an organization to work for the development of others, why can't we take a lesson from that individual and commence working towards the progress of those who have not seen a bright sunshine in their lives. It's our prerogative to share our time and knowledge with those who desperately seek the same from us. It's equivalent to serving the Lord. You would have a close encounter with so many ardent individuals that take a deep sense of pride in rendering their sacred services to those who are poverty-stricken. Volunteer services immensely pave the right track for those who want to involve themselves in philanthropic activities so that they can impart their time and understanding in others and mingle with those who belong to diverse cultures and backgrounds.

In simple words, "volunteering" can be defined as undertaking an activity that can be employed for the purpose of improving the quality of life. It is not constrained inside your nearby region. You can expand your options by opting for a volunteer program abroad. The programs of the volunteer work are designed by the organization for which you are going to volunteer. Most of the volunteer programs that are available overseas are adaptable. People often sign themselves up for brilliant volunteer programs because of the reason that they want to share and give something back to the world.

Go Voluntouring is an organization that provides diverse opportunities to individuals that are willing to undertake Volunteering services in another country and contribute their skills and knowledge to less-privileged people. They gladly accept volunteering programs for the growth of destitute communities.

Circus Abuse

I must have been around 6 years old when I last went to a circus. My aunt and uncle took me and my sister, who would have been around 4 or 5 at the time, to a tented circus. We ate cotton candy (something I never particularly liked but felt that as a kid I should eat it) while we watched the performances and I remember having the feeling that my aunt wanted us to have more fun than we were having. My sister might have been too young still to really know what was going on, and probably only noticed the bright lights, loud sounds and activity, not that the feats and performances were hard to accomplish. I had a hard time enjoying myself during the performance. Even at 6 years old animal welfare was a big passion and elephants had been my favorite animal since before I knew what that meant (I recently cleaned out some old storage boxes from my childhood and found half a dozen elephant stuffed animals and books). Before we went inside the tent there was an Asian elephant in her own small tent where we could all see. There was probably someone there answering questions about her. All I noticed was the chain around her back leg, keeping her from moving. There was a thin layer of straw on the ground, but she was kept very still by that chain. During the performances I wondered about that chain: I don't remember the actual circus acts.

After the circus was over there was an elephant with a box saddle in the parking lot where you could pay for a ride. It was a smaller space than a pony ride would have used so the ride wasn't very long. While waiting in line for an elephant ride, I noticed a lush lawn right next to the elephant and wondered, after watching her feet squish into the asphalt, why we weren't on the grass. Surely that would have been more comfortable for her, since an elephant had different feet than a horse and probably felt the hot ground. So why not use the grassy area? My little sister and I took our turn on the elephant's back, which was pretty much just a circle around, but I wasn't that impressed. You'd think riding an elephant would be the coolest thing, but maybe it was like cotton candy, and I was just supposed to like it but just didn't care for it much. And at what expense was the experience? The elephant couldn't possibly want to do it, but maybe it wasn't so bad, at least for the people who got a real joy out of it.

One of the most horrific topics of animal welfare is the use of animals, namely elephants, in circuses. In the wild elephants roam hundreds of acres of savannah or forest, using their strength to take down tall trees, and even zoos are revamping their enclosures to more closely mimic the wild. Free contact (which necessitates the use of force, domination and punishment) is illegal in zoos, with enforcement starting in two years. We know that elephants are sophisticated animals with intelligence levels up there with chimps and dolphins, and social and emotional levels rivaling our own, yet we permit this type of thing to go on. Repeatedly beating elephants, even babies, over the head with hooks and clubs to get them to submit is common, and using hooks and clubs is perfectly legal.

Watch the PETA video on YouTube that shows elephant abuse in the most famous animal circus in the world. Trainers beating elephants with hooks sharp enough to pierce their skin. There's even a few seconds where you can see a trainer gouging an elephant's trunk with the hook (called an ankus or bullhook) and leading her with the hook still inside her skin. Sounds harsh, doesn't it? Maybe if it sounds like something you wouldn't be able to watch, or something you'd have to turn off after a few seconds or something that would stick in your head for days, maybe you shouldn't be going to the circus. Maybe, if you can't handle knowing that something so severe occurs in animal circuses, you shouldn't be giving them your admission money so quickly. Maybe you shouldn't show your kids the "wonders of the circus" because you know what happens right before they all go on stage, and right after. Maybe you should just skip the circus instead. But you should still watch the video. It's 4 minutes that might haunt you at least for the rest of the day, but this is reality for people and animals across our country. Endangered animals, mind you. Animals we're supposed to be protecting. Animals we're supposed to want to keep around for future generations. Mass murdering criminals on death row are treated better than these elephants are. If you really want, read this investigation into the circus. It's very long and even more horrific, but it's true.

Lindsay writes her animal loving blog Miniature Mastadon and, right up until her senior year of high school, was going to work with animals. After changing courses and getting a degree in writing, she ended up working in a zoo for a little more than a year. Being face to face with rhinos, giraffes, ostriches, gaur and even super close to an elephant herd (faves) dawned the realization that she can't quite ignore the need to be involved in some way. The Miniature Mastadon is an outlet to write about animal news, triumphs, discoveries, and even some sadness. All discussion, thoughts, questions and stories are most fully welcome so come chime in!

Homeless Shelters Are More Than A Roof And A Bed

Homelessness can affect anyone. Even if you believe that your job is secure and your life is stable today it doesn't mean that things will remain the same in the future.

As the global economic downturn has caused more people to lose their jobs an increasingly large percentage of the population in the United States is having a more difficult time keeping up with their rent or mortgage payments. As a result many people who never even considered the possibility of being homeless are now finding that they are living on the streets or trying to get into a homeless shelter for the night.

Homeless shelters play a very important role in our society. Many people who suddenly find themselves without a home end up spending at least some of their nights in a homeless shelter.

Most homeless shelters are located in large towns and big cities. They offer people who don't have a home to go to a bed for the night. Although the majority of them provide this service only in the evening, some homeless shelters are open twenty four hours a day.

Most shelters do not have any restrictions as to the type of individuals that they will give shelter to, provided that they are not violent or intoxicated. For the most part no person who is in need will be turned away.

With that being said, some shelters are available only to women, some are only for men, and some offer mixed facilities. These facilities are run by different organizations. For example, some are maintained by the federal government, some by the state, some by religious organizations, and others by non-profit organizations.

Many organizations also offer more than a bed for the night. A lot of them have soup kitchens that provide hot meals at no charge. And some offer people help with finding a job and preparing for employment interviews. Their aim isn't just to put a roof over someone's head and a bed under their body for the night. It's also to help people to become functioning and productive members of our society.

These residences are more than structures that keep displaced individuals off the street. By receiving support, counseling and training it's possible for even chronically homeless people to be rehabilitated to the point where they get back on their feet and once again have feelings of self-respect and self-worth.

Because it is expensive to keep a homeless shelter running many establishments ask for financial assistance as well as volunteers.

Multifunctional software known as "211 software" has been developed to track the progress of individuals, manage the homes, help to manage disasters, and more.

Interview With Bruno Serato, Local Hero Who Feeds 300+ Kids Daily

You have been featured in People Magazine, on Oprah's Facebook page, in The Huffington Post, and on the CBS Evening News, winning many humanitarian awards. Did you ever think from feeding 80 kids that first night, you'd be doing this for hundreds of kids, every night, for seven years?

No, no I never thought I would because for 7 years I've been doing it under the radar and nobody knew it. Now I've just exploded. I don't know why, but it's so amazing. When I started the original year, I knew I was going to do this for some time, but I never dreamed that 7 years later I'd still be doing this every single day. I can't believe it has been so long. It's really amazing to me.

Who or what inspires you to keep doing this everyday?

Oh my mom, obviously. She's the one behind everything and I know that if I stop, she will probably be mad at me. I don't want to make mama mad! She's the one who is responsible for keeping this going. This is her legacy.

That's amazing. So you started Caterina's Club in her honor. Can you tell us more about that? What are some ways we can get people to help Caterina's Club to grow?

Seven years ago, I asked some women to come here [Anaheim White House] for lunch, telling them I would like to do something for children in the Anaheim motel area. So I started a club on behalf of my mother, calling it Caterina's Girls Club. We did that to support a lot of girls to have a brighter future. To help, anybody can be part of it--any woman who wants to be part of Caterina's Club can be part of it. I do a luncheon every three months at the Anaheim White House. People pay $55 to attend. That goes to the motel kids program, so you not only have fun and a good lunch, but you are also helping a child receive free meals. For anyone who wants to be part of it, they can go to Caterina's Club to find out more.

I don't know if many people know, but you were involved with helping some victims of Hurricane Katrina. Could you speak more about that?

There were some people who had been relocated to California and we found out that one of them used to be a waiter in Louisiana. I think he worked at the Hyatt as a waiter and we hired him to work with us. He was able to save money to go back to Louisiana. He was a really good guy, was able to get his wife and children back together, put them back on track and back to Louisiana. I'm always helping others because I think that there often shortages in the world. I believe in helping others and making life better for everybody. Working for Katrina was only one example.

As you may know, one month ago, I gave away 200 lunches to 200 non-profit, 501(3) charities.* Every Wednesday, starting January 2012, a registered, 501(3) charity will come for a free lunch to the Anaheim White House, which will be good for them. Yes, because a lot of the non-profits are in a lot of trouble because they don't have enough money and the government has stopped subsidizing them. I have a beautiful banquet hall that I use for banquets and weddings--and since I don't use it often, I thought I could give it away for lunch for [these groups] to use.

Wow, that's amazing. Thank you so much. You seem to be so passionate and inspired about helping others. Can you speak more, in addition to your amazing mother, about some people who have inspired you to become the renowned chef/restaurateur/humanitarian that we know today?

I came from a very poor family, growing up with nothing. When I grew up that way, getting more later in life, I decided to share what I have. When I was younger, I was poor and my family received help from some neighbors and I decided to do the same thing too. The inspiration came from how I grew up myself and the fact that I grew up in poverty. Not below the poverty level, but I grew up with not much around me. Now that I have a little bit more, I decide to give back to the community, to the people who need it the most. They are my inspiration.

You seem to also mentor the kids that you feed, serving as an amazing example. What would you say to these kids who have limited resources, but who have a lot of passion like you did growing up?

What I would say to them, first off, is that I want them to graduate from college. After they do that, I want them to never forget where the pasta came from when they didn't have any. That way, they can keep doing this same thing themselves for other children. I want them to one day do what I am doing for them--I'm sure some kids will do that. I've had kids tell me, "I want to do what you do one day because it's amazing. I appreciate it so much that you feed me pasta every night." The most beautiful gift I receive is when I know that these kids want to do the same thing when they get older by making sure no children go hungry.

You have had extensive experience in the culinary industry. You came to the United States with $200 in your pocket, starting off at La Vie en Rose in Brea. Can you talk a little bit about where your passion not just for helping others, but for food came from? Who were your mentors?

When I was fourteen years old, my mom and dad had a small, Italian trattoria, a mom-and-pop type of place. The fact that I was fourteen when I started working in the food industry started it all. My mom was the chef and I was helping her, which taught me a lot by working with food at a younger age. When they sold the restaurant, I decided to go back as a waiter; from waiter, I went up to where I am today. The beginning of everything in the food business started with my mom and dad's small restaurant in Italy.

How do we keep this program of feeding hundreds of motel children you've been doing for seven years going?

Ultimately, I want this to be nationwide. My goal is have every Boys & Girls Club in the country following my program. And if every Boys & Girls Club in the country follows my program, the children in America will go to bed with full stomachs instead of going to bed with empty stomachs. I believe in the power of other Boys & Girls Clubs working in combination with other chefs or restaurateurs out there. This is my goal. I want this to be nationwide.

What are some amazing projects we expect to see from you, Bruno Serato, and from the renowned Anaheim White House? What should we look forward to?

My next project is to start moving out motel families from where they are because feeding the kids feels good, but I know that the kids go back to a motel environment that is not nice. What I would like to do is start to move families from a one-bedroom location with no kitchen to a two-bedroom apartment. This is where I need the White House customers to help me continue doing what I do. All together, we can do it. With many people behind something, we can do so much. The community together does a lot. If you want to make a difference, look up the 501(3) foundations in Orange County that are doing great things. I just love them so much because they are doing many caring things. I really mean that; we are all working together to make Orange County a much better place to live.

I appreciate your time. You run such an amazing establishment, feeding kids every day, inspiring hundreds of thousands of people to do more.

If I can do that alone, feeding 300 children, everyday and alone, imagine what we can do together! We can feed millions of kids. That is my goal. I tell people that I'm not a magic man. I do it with my own hands, in my own kitchen, with my own pasta. Together we can do something to change the world.

The Importance of a Good Vocabulary

When you are in school the teachers and instructors work hard to teach you a good vocabulary. It is important in life to know how to use the words and to know different words that mean the same thing. Having a strong vocabulary will enable you to understand other people better and will improve your ability to communicate with others.

For almost every word that we choose to use in the English language there are other words that have the same meaning. These words can often times make the things we are saying sound more poetic when we speak. Sometimes these other words are better understood by some people than they are by other people. Sometimes the using of a different word to say the same thing makes the person appear more intelligent and like they have a better education.

Our vocabulary skills reflect on the education we received and they reflect on our intelligence. In a job interview two candidates who have equally impressive credentials may be judged on their vocabulary skills. The candidate that is more articulate will be the one that the company chooses to hire because this person will be considered to be a bigger benefit to the appearance of the company.

Every one of us uses slang words and slang terms when we are around our family members and our close friends. Some groups of people even give new meanings to words. Only the people in the group will understand what is being said when the word is used inappropriately. This way of communicating with friends is fine but we also need to be able to communicate with people outside of our circle of friends. We need to be able to make people from all walks of life understand what we have to say and we need to understand what they are saying to us.

If you are buying life insurance and you do not understand the terms that the insurance agent is using you can be confused about which policy to purchase. Different groups of professionals also have what appears to be their own language that they speak. If you have a large vocabulary to rely on it is likely that you can determine what the other person is talking about simply by how the word is being used in a sentence.

The only sure way to increase your vocabulary is to ask questions. When someone uses a word or a phrase you are unfamiliar with do not hesitate to ask them what the word or phrase meant. There is no shame in not knowing something there is shame in not trying to learn.

Factors Influencing Level of Volunteering Services

The number of youths engaged in volunteering services is increasing day by day. According to motivational theories, volunteering persists depending on the extent to which experience fulfills relevant needs and motives.

The article will help you to understand the major factors that influence the level of volunteering services. Main factors include attachment to the community, commuting times, socioeconomic characteristics, volunteer retention and the last factor is community's capacity to non-profit organizations.

Attachment to the Community

The factor attachment to the community actually encourages volunteering. Indicators like number of multi-unit dwellings, homeownership as well as population density plays a significant role in determining whether residents come with long-term attachment or commitment to their respective communities or not.

It has been observed that positive and strong relationship between metropolitan volunteer rates and homeownership rates indicate high and low rates of volunteering. Adding to it, communities with high multi-unit housing like apartment buildings attract more transient population and come with low volunteer rates.

Socioeconomic characteristics

Socioeconomic characteristics are among other factors that influence level of volunteering services. Volunteers keep into account the aspects like employment, education, income and housing of areas which they have selected for their volunteering services.

Commuting

Another major factor that deeply affects the volunteering services is commuting. Various modes of communication are there but though it becomes a problem to move ahead with specific volunteering programs.

It is one of the main needs of the members to move from one place to another in order to meet residents of the region to work as per the programs one have selected like environment & wildlife, learn abroad, teach & coach overseas, women's & youth and much more.

Volunteer retention

One of the factors that hamper the volunteering services is volunteer retention. There could be several reasons for it like high rates of states, low-level of education, un-awareness of programs, age and much more. Other factors that cause retention includes expectations, rules, systems, people, communication, individualism, climate, rewards and lots more. Volunteering services are successful if all elements of functional volunteer management program are in place.

Thus, it can be said from the discussions that it is essential to focus on identifying staffing needs, design member roles, recruit, training, performance evaluation, appreciation and recognition to make volunteering successful in a particular area.

Adding to it, it is essential to focus on motivational needs, treating members as equals, promoting opportunities for interaction and much more depending on the kind of volunteering programs selected by the individuals.

Go Voluntouring has been offering the volunteering services for community development, environment & wildlife, etc. Individuals can make selection among Volunteer Programs by selecting travel destination, cost, ideal age and other factors in Canada.

Puerto Ricans have migrated to the mainland of the United States since at least the 1830's. During the 1890's, one of the first small groups of Puerto Ricans arrived in East Harlem. The United States took possession of Puerto Rico at the end of the Spanish-American War in 1898 and has retained sovereignty there ever since. In 1917, the Jones-Shafroth Act gave the islanders U.S. citizenship along with the obligation of serving in the American armed forces. This newly acquired citizenship and the rights that accompanied it allowed native Puerto Ricans to work and live in the United States while being able to travel without the need of a passport between the island and the United States mainland. They did not have to go endure the Ellis Island Immigration processing headaches which Europeans and other Latin Americans had to submit to.

Poverty and difficult economic times drove these people to the United States. The men who could not find jobs had the option of joining the United States Military. One of the most noted military units at that time was New York's 369th Infantry, to which many Puerto Ricans and African-Americans belonged. Puerto Ricans, in search of a better existence than what they found in Puerto Rico, continued to migrate to the United States after both World Wars. Many displaced Island workers were initially lured to New York and other cities by the booming postwar economy and the opportunities that it afforded.

As a result of the commercial air travel boom in 1945, a one-way ticket from San Juan to New York all of a sudden cost less than $50. This added to a steady stream of Puerto Rican migration which had begun during World War I, reaching a population zenith for Puerto Ricans in the United States, circa 70,000 to 250,000 people, between 1940-1950.

Trying to Adjust to Their New Home

Oblivious to the fact that they would be facing a highly racial labor market that would deny them the opportunity to move front and center into the American mainstream, a large number of Puerto Rican families made New York City's East Harlem their first mainland destination. As the Puerto Ricans continued to move to East Harlem, they encroached many existing communities and began forming their own distinctive neighborhoods, establishing their own values, traditions and cuisine. Though they inhabited dilapidated neighborhoods living in old broken-down houses left behind by the previous immigrant residents, they still managed to establish a cultural life full of great vitality and gregariousness. The people of "El Barrio" always banned together as a group united in their common interests. Assimilation into the American culture was not their priority.

As long as they lived here, they were going to preserve their heritage by speaking Spanish, with their unique, colorful music, and by instituting traditional cultural activities. They never completely cut their ties with their homeland. Since they were able to go back and forth with ease, there really was no need to sever ties. Their only major anxiety at that time was to find the means of surviving economically. Puerto Ricans by the thousands found employment in the factories as unskilled operators and as seamstresses in the garment industry. They competed with other ethnic groups for unskilled labor jobs. They became maids, maintenance workers, dishwashers, janitors, doormen and laundry workers.

Many, though, became entrepreneurs establishing religious shops, bodegas (grocery stores), carnicerias (meat stores), restaurants and other shops. These stores mushroomed all over East Harlem. During the summer months one would see on every corner the familiar sight of a man selling "Piraguas," (shaved ice with a thick flavored syrup over it). In New York, especially within East Harlem, the Puerto Ricans suffered the same hardships and racial discrimination that earlier immigrants such as the Irish, the Italians and the Jewish community had to endure. Good paying jobs were not available to them due to an inability to master the English language and specialized working skills. They were labeled as minorities suffering widespread discrimination by the hiring practices of businesses.

Hello Spanglish

Puerto Ricans not only had to cope with racial discrimination and cultural differences, they also had to face the language barrier. It was very difficult and frustrating for migrating Puerto Ricans to speak English. This became a racially discriminating factor for them as they adjusted to their new environment.. Out of extreme necessity, in order to survive in the midst of a highly prejudiced society, a new form of communication with its own vocabulary was created. It was called "Spanglish." Spanglish was common throughout Puerto Rican neighborhoods, as frustrated Puerto Rican residents struggled to pronounce strange English words correctly. Some say it is a mixture of Spanish and English commonly used by the Puerto Ricans of New York, better known as "Nuyoricans." The dialect is really a jumble of English and Spanish words and phrases that jumps back and forth between the two languages. Also, if a Spanglish speaker is unsure if a word is correct or not, then a Spanish suffix is added to the end of English words, such as in the word "plataforma," which means platform. Here are a few examples of Spanglish phrases that were used then and even more so now.

1. Jorge, mi cari?o, what are you doing here?

2. Oye nene, ya comiste el lonche?

3. Mami, hecha me la bendici?n, que voy chopin. (cho-ppen)

4. Hay bendito, Ernesto lost his job y est? bien pelao.

5. Hey honey, va a chequear el newspaper para ver si el show est? all??

6. Te veo ahorita, me voy de shopping para el mol.

7. Oye mi negro, Que vas hacer this weekend.?

8. Oye Marta, el hijo tuyo le gusta bulear a los otros ni?os.

9. Petra, voy al banco, to cash my check...vengo enseguida.

10. Juanito, come here and give abuelita un beso.

In part two of this 4 part series, we'll explore how Puerto Ricans struggled to assimilate into American society.

The Contingent Valuation Method - University of West Florida Football

Valuing public goods is sometimes difficult due to the influences of hypothetical bias, and even a lack of historical pricing, but techniques have been established for estimating the value of these types of goods. Contingent Valuation and Willingness to Pay are the two biggest techniques for valuing public goods with Contingent Valuation being the biggest. The Contingent Valuation Method is used to estimate economic values for public goods and is used to estimate both use and non use values. For example, this method can be used by a university wishing to add a new varsity sports program to their athletic department, like a college football team. The Contingent Valuation Method can help determine if adding a football program is feasible, in terms of what the college football program is worth to a university, students, and other relevant stakeholders.

For instance, let's say the University of West Florida (UWF), which is located in Pensacola Florida, had a goal of adding a varsity football team to its athletic department and that UWF will allocate the costs to fund this football team for the next 10 years by adding $50 extra to all students when they register for the fall semester. Depending on the goals of UWF, this fee could disappear altogether within 10 years and simply be funded by general ticket sales, memorabilia sales revenue, and perhaps TV revenue, if the program is successful. Before the football program is actually established, the UWF athletic department needs to find out what the students actually think of this idea, mainly to see if adding a football program is worthwhile. This can best be completed by performing a survey to the UWF student body. Of course, hypothetical bias needs to be taken into account when performing these surveys. Significant difference between response to real and hypothetical valuation questions is often referred to as hypothetical bias. In other words, will the students really support paying this added fee if the football program is unsuccessful in terms of winning? Survey questions could be asked as follows:

How much would you be willing to pay in extra tuition costs to have a varsity football program for the 2012 academic year?

To ensure that this survey avoids respondents evoking hypothetical bias the survey should be done in person, with the following follow up questions:

Would you pay $50 extra for the extra benefit of having a varsity football program for the fall 2012 academic semester?

The respondents should be given all relevant information pertaining to the costs benefits of having this football program and the worst case scenarios associated with having this added program. Each student respondent should be asked this one last question:

Would you be willing to pay this extra fee without using any form of financial aid for each fall semester you are enrolled in classes at UWF?

This last question will help illustrate to the students that the student body is solely responsible for the football program, and is directly being paid for by the students. Thus, this question will help eliminate hypothetical bias from occurring in the student's responses.

Doomsday 2012 Innovations: Asteroid Defenses, Cyborgs, the LHC and Genetic Experiments

With 2012 looming before us, we should wonder, are doomsday scenarios complete hogwash or can science validate them?

Planet X and Asteroids

Planet X is an example of scientific misunderstanding meets ancient mythology. Planet X describes any potential new planet. Once confirmed as a planet, it then receives an actual name; however, somehow Planet X became synonymous with Nibiru, an ancient mythological mystery planet that is going to destroy earth someday. According to NASA, there is no sign that Nibiru exists. Much of the evidence samples offered as proof of Nibiru's existence on the internet are actually photographic artifacts or lens flares, and not an actual planet. We should be perfectly safe.

Asteroids; however, could be a problem. Earth has been hit before and it will be hit again. Mathematical models have calculated that in 2186, an 1800 foot asteroid, which could lead to mass extinctions, has a 1 in 1000 chance of hitting the earth, which really aren't great odds for us. NASA is presently developing new innovative techniques to safely land on an asteroid, which may be useful in diverting this disaster, similar to the movie Armageddon; however, unlike the movies, scientists feel that to successfully alter the asteroid trajectory, the mission would need to be accomplished a century before the impact.

The Big Bang and Black Holes

When the physics community starts talking about how they're going to try to reproduce the event that created the universe in Switzerland, people begin to wonder. What effect would an artificial, miniature big bang have on the world? Can a miniature black hole actually be formed? Can a single experiment ultimately cause the destruction of the universe as we know it? Most scientists view these risks as negligible. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) simply doesn't have enough power to ever reach the energy necessary to be a major risk to the world and if a black hole was possible, it would dissipate immediately and be inconsequential. The general consensus among physicist is that the LHC is completely safe; however, I would be lying if I claimed we knew everything about the universe. We have hardly scratched the surface. Who knows what is possible, but then again, isn't that part of the fun? Nothing would ever get done in life without taking some calculated risks. Because of the LHC, we are closer to finding the Higgs Boson particle, an essential key component in particle physics.

Artificial Intelligence

As a society, if we create a slave work-force of artificially intelligent computers, we might be asking for trouble, at least that is the general consensus of countless science fiction movies and books. Presently we are creating lifelike human robots and incredible artificial neural networks. The first stand-up comedian computer and the first computer that actually understands emotions are presently being developed. Research is also underway to developing self-healing electronics and one scientist is actually running a robot with neuronal cells. These innovations are pushing the line between human and machine. If that line is crossed, and the differences between human and machine are no longer so cut and dry, societal rules will need to change. We cannot enslave our fellow man, nor can we mistreat our pets. A self-emoting and intelligent machine will need to be given the same rights.

Genetic Engineering

A genetically engineered monster will not likely bring our destruction. We can be monsters all by ourselves. The movie Gattaca does not describe your average doomsday scenario, but it does show how genetic engineering could lead to social and cultural destruction. In the movie, society has genetically removed all "bad" traits from humans, ranging from disease to personality traits. Anyone not genetically engineered in the movie, was considered less than human and had become a lower caste of working-class slaves.

This theme is reminiscent of the abhorrent and evil quest of the Third Reich to create a perfect Aryan nation during WWII, and for this reason alone, this future should be avoided at all costs. Furthermore, in nature there is no perfection. It is a constantly evolving system. If we reached a state of perfection, as a human race we would have no need to grow or evolve. We would become stagnant and eventually die off. While we are way off from the future observed in the movie, the recent introduction of personal genotyping is scary. These companies, with your DNA, will determine your ancestors and tell you what diseases and medication you are most susceptible to. This could be a disaster because many of these disease and medication connections are actually based on limited scientific studies. They are not necessarily accurate. Not only can this make people worry unnecessarily, if insurance companies ever get their hands on this information, they would potentially have another reason to deny health coverage to people in need.

We Are Our Own Worst Enemy

Doomsday scenarios are fun. They have a hint of mystery to them, a bit of conspiracy, and they pique our basic emotions - fear of the unknown and fear of death. The more fantastical they are, the more exciting they become; however, a key in most Armageddon stories, modern or otherwise, not counting a random asteroid strike, is that our ultimate destruction comes from the choices we make. Whether it's poor foresight (not thinking of possible consequences of scientific actions, using up all of our natural resources) or complacency, (not fighting injustices), our own downfall will likely be our own fault.

San Diego Elephant Dies

Since the beginning of human settlements have been altercations between people and elephants and it's led to a lot of deaths on both teams. Elephants are destructive animals: it's what they evolved to do. You don't get a 4-5 ton animal without a little muscle. African elephants tear down trees and destroy vegetation, which can be good for the environment as it fosters new growth and allows much smaller animals the chance to eat the leaves of felled trees, but it's not so good for human farms. And eight years ago in Swaziland there was an elephant population problem. There were so many on preserves that they were overcrowding and could damage the populations of other animals.

So the decision was made to have some of them killed.

It's called culling, and it's a practice used in wild animal management. In the US we have deer season which allows hunters the opportunity to shoot a buck for sport or food during times when there are too many deer for one area. It's against the rules to shoot a doe or fawn, ensuring there will be genes to go around for next season. But a cull in Africa can mean an entire family, a whole herd, is taken out. The decision isn't made lightly, and it's not done for sport. But it's still a little hard to believe killing an entire family or more of an endangered species is the best way to manage a population (although, if you think transporting the family to another preserve or another area where elephants aren't in high numbers, I'm sure park rangers would love to hear your plan for corralling 10-20 9,000 pound creatures that doesn't cost a fortune).

Enter the San Diego Zoo. In 2003 11 elephants were "rescued" from a planned cull in Swaziland and shipped to the United States. A few of the elephants went to Florida and the rest came to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, where they proceeded to reproduce. Very quickly. One elephant arrived pregnant, and the one male went ahead and did his job with the rest of them. If memory serves, 8 babies were born in 8 years and one of the males that went to Florida was brought to San Diego, bringing the total elephant population at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park to 17.

Yesterday, though, the total dropped to 16. One of the elephants, a semi-dominant female named Umoya, died after an apparent conflict with another elephant. This isn't entirely unusual because elephants are known to throw their massive weight around, and because their society is matriarchal (females are dominant) the many ladies need to work out a hierarchy. The reason this does seem unusual, however, is these elephants have lived together for 8 years and would be seen working together for a unified cause, like protecting a newborn. Umoya was #2 in the elephant herd, but #1 within her own little circle.

Unfortunately, no keepers were around to witness any fighting (the wounds were likely inflicted in the early morning hours before keepers arrive) so until the necropsy results we'll probably not know the cause or reasons. And even if it is proved that she died from wounds related to a fight we'll never know what caused it or probably who the other elephant in the fight was. Both male and female African elephants have tusks because males don't stick around in herds once they hit their teens, but Umoya was in an area with the herd's male. It's not unheard of for captive elephants to cause fatal damage to each other, either, but of all the zoos in this country the Safari Park gives their herd a pretty decent life.

Keepers said Umoya's wounds didn't immediately appear to be life threatening (not very deep, little blood), making her death even more shocking. Some of the keepers have been with Umoya since she arrived from Africa, and these elephants feel very much like family. People everywhere are heartbroken at the loss of pets, and these keepers have worked very intimately with the elephants for 8 years and are devastated at the loss of one of their herd.

Umoya left behind two calves, one of which is less than 2 years old (he'll be properly cared for by keepers and the rest of the herd). As a wild born elephant, her genes are valuable to the captive "world herd" of elephants, and the scientific and conservation communities will miss her, too. It's of course never ideal to keep elephants captive, even in the best of situations, but that's a whole different topic. The Safari Park, the Zoo, the keepers, the rest of the herd, her calves, and the San Diego public (yours truly included) will miss Umoya.

Engineering Unlimited Energy Resources and Value

Put enormous magnifying glasses on the outsides of Egyptian-like pyramid structures focused towards the center of a geodeisic dome. Change ocean water into into hydrogen gas and oxygen gas.

Envision taking the biggest pyramid in Egypt and turning it upside down. Get enough of those pyramids to create an enormous sphere, with the bottoms of the pyramids on the outside of the sphere, and all the tips focused towards the center.

Put half of the sphere underwater at sea level, and the top above sea level would look like a giant dome.

Put mirrors on the bottom side which is underwater, so the Sun will reflect back to the thermal collector at the center, significantly increasing the amount of heat focused, magnified, and collected.

The Sun will focus, from sunrise to sunset, through the magnifying glasses on the dome, and will reflect off the mirrors on the underside dome. These two powerful mechanisms would focus a tremendous amount of heat energy on the thermal collector at the center. This heat would be a lot hotter than magma from a volcano. If it was not, according to simulated computer models, then increase the size of the sphere could be increased.

Use the heat from the thermal collector to change the Ocean water into pure water and some other byproducts, using two available processes. The division of water into hydrogen gas and oxygen gas can be accomplished using the process of hydrolysis. The electrical power necessary to run the process of hydrolysis can be created using the process of photovoltaics, using the heat from the sun to create electricity. There would be plenty of heat to vaporize the pure water into hydrogen and oxygen gases, to make products from different kinds of left over residue, and to recycle any waste.

Using formulas and methods in Physics and Chemistry, there would be 'no end' to what we could produce, and some Chemists and/or Physicists can show somebody who does not believe this is true, how to prove it for oneself.

If we needed to, we could simply use the thermal energy to pump ocean water through big pipes on the Ocean floor, to a dome on nearby land, where the ocean water could be separated into different products, especially for safety reasons.

It sure would help out with the problem of providing fuel for the World, and produce some valuable products to sell, if this kind of light magnification resource was engineered.

Second Coming?

When I woke this morning and turned on the news, I saw a report that said Muammar Quadafi had been captured and killed. There were hundreds if not thousands of people celebrating in the streets, buildings in ruin, and rubble everywhere. Later, as I took a break from working, I turned on CNBC to see riots in the streets of Greece. People being placed in ambulances, buildings on fire and utter chaos. With so much unrest in the Middle East, European countries on the brink of economic collapse, rioting in the streets, I made the comment that I think this is the beginning of the end of the planet as we know it. My husband made no response. I think this kind of statement makes people very nervous. We are both Christians, but it is a bit unsettling to think about the end of the world. Especially for those of us who have children to raise.

What will happen to them when we are no longer here to protect them? That's why it is so important for parents to build a solid foundation of faith for their children. Something they can stand on when the "ground" is shaking. My 10 year old daughter asked me if she is going to go to heaven. I told her yes, but that she had to get up everyday and be the person Jesus wants her to be. Matthew 16:27 "For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father's glory with his angels, and then will reward each person according to what he has done."

We must do all we can to turn the negative tide. Taking the time to talk to those in doubt about the promises God made to us through the sacrifice of his only Son. Using jewelry, t shirts, or accessories to prompt conversations about Jesus and the promise of salvation is something we all can do. It is our responsibility as Christians.

So as I watch the news each night, the junk on television, and deterioration of the family unit; I try to remember John 14:1-4 "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going." God's commitment to His children will never waiver. All we can do in this life is wake up everyday and be the best person we can. A person Jesus would be proud to call his brother or sister.

If The EU Breaks Up - Does That Mean WW III Comes Much Sooner?

Indeed, I certainly hope history will not repeat itself in our modern age. However, I do recall when the League of Nations broke up, and the Treaty of Versailles didn't exactly work out for the Europeans, World War II was just over the horizon. The euro zone and European Union seemed to be a good idea, keeping everyone happy, trading together, and acting as one big nation. Still, we must realize that each nation is run differently, with a slightly different culture, and obviously different expectations from the populous.

A strict centralized government, or severe restrictions from the ECB - European Central Bank will cause animosity amongst the voters in all the various nations. If you'll recall the United States had a civil war over differences of opinion, as the federal government laid down the law. As the grievances grew, and as the states divided, political impasse occurred. Today, we see far too much turbulence in the Middle East with the Arab Spring - we've also seen riots, and massive demonstrations and protests in Europe, in Greece for instance.

There is quite a bit of turmoil, and some rather harsh realities for the citizens of Europe due to all the austerity programs. Many people felt as if they got the shaft, as they will not be receiving the benefits they were once promised by their governments. They'd like to blame someone else, several European governments have had a huge turnover of their legislators, leaders, and politicians over these issues. People are not very happy.

Now then, I ask; if the EU breaks up and the euro zone collapses, along with the currency; will history repeat itself? The reason I ask this is; I see various nations lining up on various sides of the political spectrum over these economic issues. I also see how Russia is taking sides in Middle Eastern affairs along with China. I see terrorist groups which are sponsored by rogue nations, which also seem to want to build nuclear weapons. Many nations have war pacts, and strategic alliances which cannot be broken easily without repercussions. Meanwhile, all the economies are linked together.

As the sides line up, often blaming those who think differently, or those on the other side of the political spectrum, or border, in many regards we are watching a dangerous potential unfold. It wouldn't take much more than a spark to set it off. Perhaps the humans of the world, and the powers that be will consider that this dangerous path just doesn't make sense. If there is a World War III, there won't really be any straightaway winners. In other words everyone will lose, and the human race will be doomed to repeat. Indeed I hope you will please consider all this and think on it.

The Importance of Teaching Children Gun Safety

Nine times out of ten when you hear about a child shooting another child the story will go something like this: the child will have been playing with a weapon that was left within their reach. The child will be a child that was not raised around guns and have more than likely never touched a gun in their life. Their entire knowledge of these weapons will be what they have seen in the movies and on television. So they do not comprehend the real damage that these weapons are capable of inflicting. Their curiosity causes them to pick up the weapon and they accidentally shoot themselves or someone else.

If the child in question had been taught what a gun could really do to a person they would more than likely never have played with the weapons? Children are naturally curious and they see these items on the television. They need to see these items in real life and they need to be taught all of the things they can do to remain safe around a gun.

Children should be taught where the safety is located on a gun and how to tell if the safety is on or off. Many accidents happen because the person thought the safety was on. They should be taught that you never pick up a gun without checking the safety and ascertaining what position it is in.

Children need to be taught that an unloaded weapon is the most dangerous weapon of all. Many lives are taken every year because the person that was holding the gun assumed that the gun was not loaded. They should be taught to treat every gun as if it were fully loaded, even if they were the ones that removed the shells from the gun.

Children should be taught that the most important part of gun safety is that you never point a weapon at anyone that you do not intend to kill. You never point a gun at a friend when you are playing because a gun is not a toy it is a deadly weapon. You have to teach children what power these weapons have and that they have to respect that power.

Children need to know that on television people can get shot and jump right up in thirty minutes. They need to know that in real life when people get shot they probably will never get back up again.

Debate Websites - Exploring A Diverse Set Of Views

Participating in debates exposes people to a diverse range of ideas which further assists them in opening their minds up to a higher level of intellect. From imparting knowledge to helping people gaining a better understanding, online debate forums have surfaced as the best paradigm to empower people to raise issues.

The democratic society that we live in has empowered us with the freedom of speech. This freedom allows us to express our viewpoints on any topic and discuss it further with others. The topics of discussions can be anything ranging from financial crunches and income taxes to capital punishment and criminal justice. From parliament, to classrooms, to dining rooms, issues find their way on to the debating table.

Taking into consideration the urge of people who like debating over issues, many debate forums are escalating over the Internet. Some debate forums invite students to share their views on certain issues, some welcome opinions of professionals, and several conduct debating competitions online. There are also other forums that encourage people from all walks of life to put forth their viewpoints.

With so many minds coming together to share, one can only imagine the variety of topics being debated on such a forum. From poverty stricken African countries, to scrapping the highest rate of income tax, to even the recent Twitter cases, anything and everything is debated on such forums. Not just the hot topics that are debated time after time, but the many issues that have been bottled up for a long time also find their way into these forums.

The sole intention of such forums is to gain the spotlight on issues, political, social or economic, that shape up our society and encourage intellectuals to give their standpoint. This in turn pinpoints different ideas and uncovers solutions. Besides being a platform for sharing views, debate forums educate people about various regional, national and global topics, conclusively helping them form opinions.

Debate websites reach out to a larger audience, hence bringing forth diverse perspectives which give people an opportunity to explore the abounding ideas and express their own. On these forums, a group of people from around the world come together to share viewpoints, understand sensitive issues and reach a consensus to make better decisions. They can either lay foundation for a new issue to be further discussed, or give their opinions on the existing ones.

Even those who are not much of a debater can flick through the pages of such forums and unveil the mixed bags of problems or aspects of society that they never even thought existed. Due to the diversity of opinions in the forums, people catch on to how social background influences the observations, comprehension and interpretation of each individual.

Bequeathing knowledge, debate forums assist people in observing and reflecting on topics. This information pool encourages people to assess and analyse the opinions of academicians to better identify with various issues and open their minds up to a higher degree of intellect. This leads to them evaluating their own beliefs. Many are so intrigued by the perspectives that they don't keep themselves from speaking for or against a particular topic.

All in all, debate forums are the best paradigm wherein people feel free and empowered to voice their views. People should, however, always participate in debates on a good debate website which welcomes all kinds of issues, encourages strategic thinking and allows a healthy discussion.

The author of this article recommends Leicester Exchanges, a debate website that welcomes people to debate over political, economic and social issues.

The Liberty Village Phenomenon

The concept of Liberty Villages is a phenomenon which is gaining a national following. People are beginning to realize the urban lifestyle is not necessarily the way they had envisioned living. Land is at a premium. Urban land use regulations are becoming increasingly oppressive. More and more pressure is being put on developers to make "cookie cutter" neighborhoods where every house and plot of land look identical. Zoning regulations repress the individuality of each homeowner forcing them to conform to certain aesthetics which, though orderly, may not necessarily be appealing.

Ideologues from everywhere seem to want to force all people to conform to a certain set of moral values. Values which may not agree with some people or may be in direct conflict with their Faith. An increasingly deteriorating education system no longer stresses academic excellence, but rather, mediocrity. No longer is it important that a student excel in anything. Gifted students are no longer rewarded for their talents. Now, they are required to "dumb down" so as not to hurt the feelings of those less gifted. More and more people are turning to virtual schools to avoid this outrageous conduct.

Political strife throughout America is approaching a fever pitch. Never before has our nation been so polarized as it is now. Federal, State and Local governments are using propaganda and fear to pass laws "for our own safety" which are thinly veiled attempts to curtail Freedom. If you think that is not so, ask yourself this question: how many times in the last 10 years have your State and local politicians used your fear of prisoners and fear for your child's safety to get laws passed? Recently the United States Congress passed a law that would allow the President to issue an arrest decree (not a warrant) for any American citizen, have them detained without having been Mirandized, detain them indefinitely without legal access and convict them without trial. This was, not shockingly, signed into law by President Obama. The reason behind this law: to protect us from terrorism.

Hillary Clinton has made it very clear that she is very much opposed to the First, Second, Third, Fourth and Fifth Amendments to the Constitution. She does not hide the fact that she is working back door channels to force these Amendments to become obsolete. She has publicly declared these things. She has worked tirelessly to achieve her goals and is close to achieving them.

Energy costs are through the roof. The outrageous price of gasoline is forcing people to cut back on luxury items and vacations. Thermostats are turned down to as low as 60 degrees during the winter months in an effort to cut back on home heating costs. This article is being written just two days before Christmas. Traveling through town makes it quite apparent that people are cutting back on their electric decorations. Lights that used to stay on from dusk to dawn 20 years ago are now turned off by nine o'clock. Fewer and fewer houses are even bothering to put up lights.

Food prices, in spite of what the government propaganda tells us, have doubled and tripled over the past five years. Unemployment (the REAL unemployment) is close to 20%. People are spending less money on discretionary items and more on emergency stores and supplies. Crime has become an increasingly troublesome problem in every major metropolitan area in the country. The value of the dollar decreases, seemingly exponentially, every day.

In short, things in America are not looking very good. Our economy is dying, our politicians are openly corrupt, the division between the wealthy and the poor is increasing daily and the social fabric of our citizenry is quickly unraveling.

Liberty Villages provide a calming and relaxing alternative to urban living. Springing up in remote locations and even suburban areas all over the country, they are offering people a means to remove themselves from the oppression and repression of the normal way of living in America. Though Liberty Villages can differ greatly in their approach to living, they tend to have a few things in common.

The main concept of Liberty Villages is Freedom. People who buy into these villages are most often given a plot of land, typically between one-half acre to one acre, and are rewarded with the freedom to build whatever type of structure they desire. If one wishes to build a replica of the Starship Enterprise, they are free to do so without fear of reprisal from some overzealous homeowner association member or even zoning restrictions.

Most Liberty Villages also have environmentally responsible living in common. It is not uncommon to see Earthships, geodesic domes and other eco-friendly structures built on the members' land plots. Additionally, power is generally created via renewable sources such as wind turbines, solar, geo-thermal and other means. Water is frequently collected via means other than wells, wherever practical. Sustainability and recycling are the norm, rather than something your crazy, hippie neighbors do.

Nor is it uncommon to see an eclectic variety of pets within the village. Chickens, rabbits, goats, pigs and such are more commonly found than cats and dogs. This variety of pets allows the community to maintain a higher level of sustainability than will typically be found in most urban areas.

Lest you think most of the population of these communities is comprised of hippies, communists or gun-toting, anti-government radicals, the typical village is comprised of a variety of skilled and professional artisans. Electricians, doctors, veterinarians, carpenters, architects, etc., all make up the citizenry of the village. Often, these members are hand selected for their skills in order to ensure the village can operate smoothly.

Micro economies are very quick to set up within the villages. In most cases, barter is the currency of choice. If Fred has a chicken and Tom needs one to feed his family, Tom may trade a gallon of goat's milk for the chicken or agree to perform some sort of labor for Fred. However they work it out, it is always a mutually beneficial arrangement. Regular currency, like the USD is seldom used within these communities and reserved for purchases outside the community as one will generally not find a Walmart within the village.

Since these communities are usually very small, typically between 20 and 50 people, they often will set their community up as a co-operative. Food grown or items produced by the community are sold outside of the community for profit. Each member even shares in those profits, usually quarterly, semi-annually or annually.

Interest in this concept is gaining in recent years largely because of the endorsement by Senator Ron Paul. His call to citizens of the U.S. to form these types of villages and get back to the core values that made America great has spurred many into action to do just that. Home school advocates, environmentally conscious persons, those with a longing for a simpler, slower life and those who just wish to live a lifestyle free from the overbearing repression being forced upon them by their respective governing bodies are investing in these communities building a better life for themselves and their children.

If you are considering such a lifestyle change, you need to ask yourself a few basic questions.

First: is this something I am going to do for a short time or is it going to be a lifelong investment? Some communities will offer you the option for short term living arrangements, say a year or two and then accept a new investor as a replacement for you once you leave. This is not how most village members approach their community. For most Liberty Villages, this is expected to be a lifetime commitment on your part. This is due to the fact that often the members are hand selected based upon their skills, knowledge base or some other necessary criteria which ensures the success of the village. People who are involved in the process merely for the experience of it or just to get away from "normal" life for a year or two, create a void in the community after they leave. If you have a skill necessary to the survival of the community, that skill now has to be taken on by other members of the community until such time as a replacement can be found. More often than not, the interviewing process for an individual or family takes months in order to ensure that undesirable people are prevented from entering the community. Most of these communities don't want radicals, extremists, people who wear tin foil hats and the likes in their village. To ensure the right fit, they engage in a months long interviewing process to weed out the "wacko's" so to speak.

Second: is the village to which I am applying for membership one that shares my ideals, values and beliefs? Some villages are very selective in their membership. For example, they may only accept people of the same religious indoctrination as they. Some may hold more conservative moral values. Some may be more liberal and others more moderate. You have to involve yourself in the interview process vigorously to ensure that THEY are the right fit for you. If you are an ultra conservative person and you end up buying into an ultra liberal village, you are going to find yourself being very unhappy. If you are a Baptist and end up buying into Catholic dominated village, you are going to find yourself being very unhappy. So do yourself a favor and make sure you are very well informed about who is intended to make up the citizenry of the community and make sure you can live with them.

Third: does the concept of this village really make sense to me? Some people who are forming these villages are promising you pie in the sky dreams. Things are going to be rosy and easy and you are going to spend your days by a pool sipping mint juleps and being waited upon by gorgeous members of the opposite sex who are scantily clad. If this happens to you, run! These people are not interested in your values and beliefs. They are only interested in the status of your checkbook and your gold card. The fact is, a legitimate village opportunity will not promise you anything other than hard work followed by more hard work. Each member of the village is expected to do their share to ensure the success of the village. Whether that means tending the village mercantile, managing the herds, working land, constructing another building or whatever, it is going to be a lot of hard work. Life in these villages will be very much like life in early 1800's America only with modern conveniences. Every member is essential to the success of the village.

The alternative to this type of village is the suburban village. These are typically not much better than a homeowners association or gated community. They are usually more interested in living a green lifestyle and will require you to build a green dwelling of some sort. They will not have the same village mentality, but rather, the environmentally conscious mentality. That is fine, if that is what you are looking for; and this is a way of life which needs supporting. However, most people looking at a Liberty Village as a way of life are interested in a specific set of core values to which they wish to return.

Fourth: Am I suited to the lifestyle of this village? If you are a person who is used to comfortable living, a sedentary life and a nine to five workday, you probably don't want to get involved with a community which is just starting out. The work is hard and often from sun up to sun set or later. You may even find yourself sleeping out of doors for a while with a rock as your pillow.

More importantly than your lifestyle choices, is your health. Some of these villages are located very far from any town or city. Medical issues may have to be handled locally until paramedics can arrive. In some cases, this can be more than an hour's wait. If you may require immediate medical attention for a known condition, you may want to look into a suburban village rather than a more remote one. Which brings up another item to consider: insurance. Many villages will require you to have your own health insurance. This is because most often, the land is privately owned. The landowner does not want to incur the expense of your medical emergencies or the resulting increase of his own insurance. Besides, it is just plain rude and uncivilized to make the landowner pay for your medical situations.

Fifth: Can I afford to do it? Can I afford NOT to do it? This is probably the most crucial set of questions you need to ask yourself. There will be a financial obligation to just about any village to which you wish to belong. This financial obligation may be a one time payment. It may be a down payment followed by monthly payments for a certain period of time. Frequently, the fee is divided into half cash and half some sort of resources the community may need, say, food stores, equipment, supplies, livestock, etc. It is important that you fully understand the financial obligation you will have to either the landowner or the community.

As to whether you can afford NOT to do it, well, that is a question only you can answer. Is your current lifestyle making you happy? Are you finding fulfillment in your life? Will your current lifestyle hinder or help your children? Is your current lifestyle going to work for you as you age, mature and change? These are just a few of the questions you need to discuss with your family as you are considering making this change.

Most people who start the process will not finish it as they realize they aren't up to the challenge. This is fine. Village life isn't for everyone. But for those few of you who are willing and able to make the sacrifices and changes necessary to adapt to the lifestyle Liberty Villages offer, it can be a rewarding and fulfilling experience for you and your family.

Testifying to the Truth

Jesus said to his disciples, imminently before he was betrayed, scorned, and ultimately crucified:

When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, he will testify on my behalf. You also are to testify because you have been with me from the beginning.
~John 15:26-27 (NRSV)

The Advocate, otherwise known as the Holy Spirit - and variously also, the Counsellor - informs us of truth as if Jesus, himself, and the Father were speaking directly to us - because they are. So is the will of God.

TRUTH MATTERS

The truth is critical in a vociferously fallen world.

And the world will hate us for it, especially when the Advocate compels us most certainly in truth; by matters, methods, and ideas of the world's derision - and many are those.

That is Jesus' warning in this part of John's gospel. The truth may set us free, but it will bond us to God against the world - that is the unfortunate, though critical, destiny of the Christian being.

These are most important words that Jesus is sharing; we might share the most vital of messages from our deathbed. Jesus knew where he was going, and where he was going the disciples could not come.

Truth matters so much in life; it is the thread carrying us from the cradle to the grave; our legacy - a resounding echo - into eternity.

THE ROLE OF REMEMBRANCE

Though the truth is to bond to us, by the presence of the Advocate, we necessarily remember that, due Jesus' words, life is a task of remembrance - for we too often forget. Fortunately, grace remembers our frailties.

Though we were not present at beginning of this message, as the disciples were, we are present as we read our Bibles - Jesus alive and breathing life into us via the inspired Word, and the Presence of the Advocate. Reading and rereading the gospels we gain new and recurrent glimpses of Jesus' life and legacy.

And we remember. We enjoy the Lord's Supper for this reason: to remember and never forget.

Remembering Jesus' blood-spilt and body-broken sacrifice we remember the cost of truth; the truth may set us free, but it will also, at times, break us. This is a sobering reality; one that all Christians need cognisance of in advance.

The Advocate conveys the Spirit of truth; the Father's will.

Ours is to remember the nature of faith, in accord with that truth. It takes courage to obey the truth in a world that loathes it. Ours is to carry forth, in wisdom, the truth the Advocate wishes us to convey.

There Is No More Time

FOR A LONG TIME ALREADY, several essays have been written by me indicating that we are at the threshold of a new era. I have cited prophecies from all over the world, the organized religions and other esoteric works that refer to this time, given different names by different cultures. It is variously called the dawn of a new age of Aquarius, the transition to the fifth world; end of the age of iron, dawn of the golden age, the Kali yoga age, end time and so on. But the fundamental principle of doomsday remain the same, though details differ depending on the spiritual maturity, belief and cultural affiliation of the prophets and analysts.

Recent happenings all over the world serve to draw our attention to the fact that we are at the threshold of that time. There are "wars and rumors of wars". The Iran nuclear face off-a very serious rumor of war-will escalate and possibly result in mass war. It will be born of men's fears, precautions, and the "if you want peace prepare for war" syndrome. These fears mass in the beyond at what is best describes as power centers, which expand, increase and suffocate our psyches, thereby increasing the fears and apprehension of world war. As psychologists rightly know, we often experience what we are afraid of due to the law of attraction. Hence this may result in mass hysteria and finally possible war - the so called Armageddon war, or war of the anti Christ as it is sometimes called. Nostradamus already talked of the first and second Antichrist, and warned of the third codenamed Mabus, whose death will be linked to a war that will result in routing of man and beast. It will coincide with the time when the comet runs. Mabus will be the last of the three-pae-lon-ron- translated to Napoleon, and Hister, meaning Hitler were the first two.. The wars and rumors of war result from the fact that all ancient empires will resurface with different names. However, the rise and collapse of those empires will be phenomena and alarming. The number of empires that has risen and fallen since the end of the nineteenth century tend to lend credence to this assertion.

Apart from the issue of wars and rumors of wars, earthquakes are ravaging the earth. Anyone who goes to the website of the united states geological survey will be shocked at the number of recorded earthquakes on a daily basis. Comparative studies of the earthquakes on earth in the last century shows a marked progressive increase. It is within this period that we have had the most devastating earthquake in recorded history. The word "Tsunami" became popular because of increase in powerful undersea earthquakes.

Apart from unavoidable deaths through earthquakes, destruction of properties put serious pressures on our insurance companies, which spread the risks to banks while construction companies smile to the banks. This also happens with incessant flooding of whole cities and countries as once happened in Thailand. Forecasters show that the year 2012 is going to be a year of unprecedented flood.

All these are the underlying reason for the current distress. It is like the hand of the Lord is gripping the earth in judgment. Mutual recriminations, accusations, and counter accusation sand trading of blames is now resulting in what manipulators regard as pro democracy protests over the dwindling standard of living occasioned by the harsh economic realities resulting from natural disasters war and rumors of wars and, of course, corporate greed. The pro democracy and occupation protests does not solve the problem as witnessed in Egypt, where those who pushed out Mubarak came themselves under fire from fellow demonstrators. Nobody realizes that these demonstrations result in loss of man hours allover the world, which further reduces productivity and engenders more distrust between the haves and have nots. This is followed by more pro democracy and occupy protests. This is a vicious cycle that will culminate in the final collapse of world economy. This will increase religious fundamentalism, with more suicide bombings in a bid to escape the biting situation, the great tribulation. What is false in all organized religions will collapse. Since the foundations of most of the organized religions are faulty, it will throw up a pathetic scenario of confusion, anger, hopelessness, despondency and bitterness against the heads of these organizations, until some of them recognize the justice of God in World events.

The beginning of the end will be by the coming comet prophesied by all major prophets, ancient and modern.

Today, the rays of the approaching comet is causing economic, political and natural crisis and confused wiseacres are covering their fears in the continued exposition of their ignorance by unfolding world events. Already fear is revealing itself in hatred even among those who should be knowing because we are at the last phase. The judgment of God is already taking place in the house of the Lord. There, even the last help from God is being dragged to the dust, thereby making it earthly, by the very ones who should be their custodians. Even here distrust reigns supreme, and leaders are turning tyrants as the inevitable outcome of distrust.

Now, the axe is laid beside the tree and any tree that does not bear good fruit swill be cut down and thrown in the fire. A satellite is now beamed on the house of the Lord and the separation between the sheep and the goat is going on spiritually and will soon be completed. Those who will be purified under intense suffering will stand firm like oasis in a barren desert when the Sun of righteousness will reduce the pharisees to stubble. Then mankind will be able to receive help from those who mediate the help through the star of promise.

The fig tree has shed its leaves. It is clear there is no more time, for soon winter will overtake us.

Uche Mbah, author, poet, journalist, an adherent of the work In The Light Of Truth The Grail Message hails from Nigeria. His discovery that the work by Abd-ru-shin answers all questions of life if you take time to examine it propels him to share his experiences with humanity. A graduate of English, from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, he found out how all religions lead to the godhead if the original teachings of the founders are taken into account, and not the strange forms that such religious groups find themselves today. The bridge between Science and religion is bridged when we recognize the limitations of science, whose activities do not go beyond the material world, without recognizing that there is no difference between this world and the beyond.

Fair Tax: Good for Everyone?

The Fair tax is a tax proposal that would replace all federal income taxes on personal and corporate income with a new consumption based tax system. The fair tax would tax us only on what we choose to spend on new goods and services, used goods would be exempt under this proposal. While the fair tax might sound like a good idea at first. When you stop and think about it, the fair tax proposal does not sound quite as good as some might lead you to believe. The fair tax taxes at a rate of 23% of every dollar you spend including the tax. Therefore, out of every dollar you spend, 23 cents of it would be taxes. This makes the 23% a little misleading because it is actually a 30% traditional sales tax.

When I first heard about this proposal, originally it sounded like a good idea to me. No taxes on money you earn, just on what you choose to buy. Sounds great right? However, after examining it a little further, here are some of the problems I see with it. First off, it hurts new car and home sales. Why would anyone buy a new car or a new home? When they can buy a used car or home and pay no taxes. Therefore, it would hurt jobs in the automotive and housing sectors. Then there is the fact that the more money you make the less of a percent of it you spend on new goods or services. Therefore, the rich would pay significantly less taxes because the tax system would be based on how much you consume not how much you make. The middle and poor classes would end up paying more in taxes under this proposal, based on the simple fact that they spend a much higher percent of their income on necessities.

The fair tax proposal does nothing to address government spending. Until the federal government can learn to stop spending frivolously, any proposal that is come up with will be in vain. We as a country need to let congress know that we are tired of the way they are handling our tax dollars. That the government needs to stop wasting tax dollars on wars and things that we should not be involved in and start living within our means. Until we start to pay off the national debt, it will continue to be a ticking time bomb waiting to explode.

So is the fair tax proposal good for everyone? You decide.
