Alexa McDonough was leader of the New Democratic Party of Canada from 1995 to 2003. During her years as leader of the New Democratic Party of Canada, the federal NDP put a priority on the issues of health care, education, pensions and unemployment. Earlier in her political career, Alexa McDonough was distinguished as the first woman to lead a recognized political party in Canada when she was elected leader of the Nova Scotia NDP in 1980.
