A community organizer and municipal councillor from Hamilton, Andrea Horwath has been an Ontario MPP since 2004 and became leader of the Ontario NDP in 2009. As a single mother from a family of auto workers, Horwath is putting the emphasis on pocketbook issues and the affordability of everyday life in Ontario for real individuals and families. Taxes like the HST on energy, education, retirement, and jobs have all been front-and-centre for Horwath. Going into the 2011 Ontario provincial election with only 10 seats, she hopes to gain some momentum from the upsurge in the federal NDP fortunes and is stressing Affordable Change.

Hamilton Centre (2007 to present)Hamilton East (2004-07)Andrea Horwath's first stab at politics was as the NDP candidate in the riding of Hamilton in the 1997 federal election. She was defeated. Later in 1997 she turned to municipal politics and won a seat on the Hamilton City Council, on which she served for seven years. Andrea Horwath was first elected to the Ontario legislative assembly for the riding of Hamilton East in a by-election in 2004. In the small NDP caucus, she served as the NDP critic for economic development and trade, children's issues, pensions, children and youth services, women's issues and workers compensation. She was re-elected as the NDP MPP in the redistributed riding of Hamilton Centre in the 2007 Ontario provincial election.. She has been NDP critic of municipal affairs, government services, government and consumer services, children and youth services, and intergovernmental affairs. In 2009, Andrea Horwath was elected Leader of the Ontario NDP, replacing Howard Hampton who resigned.
