Gov. Howard Dean Profile

In February 2005, Howard Dean was elected Chair of the Democratic Party, a position he held until January 2009, when President Obama replaced him with Gov. Tim Kaine of Virginia. Dean was then named "chairman emeritus" of the DNC.

As chair, Dean was lead strategist, spokesman and fundraiser for DNC. He is credited with pioneering an energetic 50-state strategy that successfully lifted Democrats from massive 2004 defeat to Congressional control in 2006 and 2008, and helped propel support for the 2008 Democratic presidential primaries.

Howard Dean is a licensed physician who joined his wife, Dr. Judy Steinberg, in a family practice from 1981 to 1991. Dean's political career started with a 1981 campaign to build a local bike path.

Dean was elected to Vermont legislature in 1982 and as Lt. Governor in 1986, both part-time positions. In 1991, while examining a patient, Dean got word that the Governor had died. Dean was elected to two five-year terms as governor, serving from 1991 to 2002.

Dean was the second longest serving Vermont governor in history.
